I’m drowning here!! This year has been unlike any other year that I can remember. I have 5 students that cry on a very regular basis. Now, there’s crying and then there’s CRYING! I have one little firstie that CRIES. Loud. I mean, the whole school hears her, no lie. She has quite the reputation. Have any of you ever experienced this? I need some help with this little situation. Pretty please?

People probably won't like my response, but it works. The first week, I am compassionate and understanding...I try to bridge the gap between home and school, etc...but if it persists (and we are talking about first graders who have been in school already a year)- then I am mean, well, maybe not mean, but I reason with them and then I ignore- - if they get louder, then they get in trouble...I don't play into it, I don't give them attention...I just ignore- try to reason- and then if that doesn't work, they lose privileges or whatever I find that works for them as punishment. I don't even usually have to actually do it (maybe once) They dry it up quick...I cannot allow then to waste class time and make everyone around miserable. Sounds harsh, but it works every time (for me)
